Best fits

Payhip for transparent creator-commerce fees; Sellfy for a fixed-subscription branded store; Gumroad for zero monthly commitment and Merchant of Record simplicity; Lemon Squeezy for software/subscriptions with Merchant of Record; Podia for courses/downloads/community; Systeme.io when selling must connect to funnels, email and automation.

For more detail on choosing a replacement, see our Gumroad alternatives and Stan Store alternatives guides.

Why average order value matters

Fixed per-transaction charges hit a $10 download harder than a $500 product. Percentage fees scale with revenue. Fixed subscriptions do the opposite: painful at zero revenue, increasingly small as a share of sales. That is why “cheapest platform” is not a stable label.

Tax model matters too

Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy operate as Merchant of Record. Payhip automatically handles EU/UK VAT but should not be treated as the same global legal model. Compare responsibility, not just percentages.

Verdict

Payhip is our first comparison for general creator products because its fee ladder is transparent. Lemon Squeezy is stronger for software-oriented MoR needs. Systeme.io is more compelling when commerce is one part of a marketing stack.
